Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has added the ability to send and receive money, making it easier to send money to friends and family. In UPI payment, just a QR code is needed and the money is transferred instantly.
Account hacked with one call
However, there are many financial frauds that are happening in WhatsApp. The latest example is of a user who received a phone call from ‘Airtel’ 8420509782, informing the user that he has filed a complaint regarding an internet issue. The user told the fraudster that his father handles all the calls related to Airtel due to the family plan. Also said, “My father is not at home, please call later.”
This was followed by a strange incident as the fraudster asked him to dial ‘401*8404975600’ and someone from the Airtel call center would call back in 1-2 days. The WhatsApp user fell into the trap and actually dialed the number.
Fraudster entered the account in 10 minutes
What happened next would surprise you because, within 10 minutes of the call, he received a message on WhatsApp asking for a login PIN so that he could set up his mobile number on a new device. Within seconds, he was logged out of WhatsApp from both the phone and the laptop. He was completely confused and eventually lost all her contacts on WhatsApp. He added, ‘My dialing that code meant that all my incoming calls would go to that number and the fraudster could take my SIM.’
Ask money from friends
He was completely shocked to learn that the thug had already texted more than 40-50 contacts on WhatsApp and demanded money on his behalf. He had sought ‘cash assistance’ from them immediately and demanded some money from Paytm so that it could return it by late night on the same day. Some of his friends helped the fraudster with Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000. After this, the user lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Department.
How to avoid WhatsApp financial fraud
-Enable Two Factor Authentication in your WhatsApp. Then even after getting OTP, no one will be able to log in.
– It is advised that you do not dial ‘401’ followed by 10 digit mobile number as it is the code for call forward.
– Never click on any unknown link / do not attend any unknown phone call.
