Most passenger train cars are blue and fall under ICF, just like the mail and express cars on trains like the Shatabdi Express. These basic coaches date back to the beginnings of India’s manufacturing industry after it gained independence. The plans for these trains were developed at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Perambur, which is close to Chennai. Air brakes are used by these coaches, which can reach speeds of up to 87 miles per hour (140 kilometers per hour). All ICF Sleeper Class, AC First Class, AC Three Tier Sleeper, AC 2 Tier Sleeper, AC Chair Car, and Non-Class Chair Car coaches have been painted a standard blue color.

Meanwhile, the railways have adopted LHB Linke-Hofmann-Busch-style train coaches. ICF coaches are a darker shade, so these ones are lighter to signify their superior speed. Several new train services, including the LHB Rajdhani Express, LHB Shatabdi Express, LHB Tejas Express, LHB Double Decker, LHB Humsafar, and LHB Gatimaan, have been introduced with LHB coaches by Indian Railways.
