The five-day Hindu holiday of Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is the biggest and most colourful one. Cleaning and decorating have already started with Dhanteras, the first festival, and will culminate with Bhai Dooj.

The First Day of Diwali is Dhanteras.

Dhanteras, also called the Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. Lord Kubera & Goddess Lakshmi are honoured on this day, and may also use it as an excuse to go shopping for brand-new possessions. In hopes of attracting good fortune, shoppers invest in silver, gold, apparel, and consumer goods. Today is dedicated entirely to the financial deities.

Day Two of Diwali is known as Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali.

As per Hindu mythology and legend, Krishna battled the demon Narakasura and ultimately killed him. Diwali, a Hindu festival of lights, is held today in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The day before Diwali, people in North India celebrate Choti Diwali, also called Tamil Deepavali.

The third day of Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) celebrations

Lakshmi Pujan, which is performed on Diwali, is one of the most celebrated rituals in the Hindu calendar. Today is the most important day of the Diwali celebrations since it is the day that Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya victorious after defeating Ravana. It is widely held that Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, brings with her the good fortune and prosperity that she is celebrated for. Along with Goddess Lakshmi, people also pay homage to Ganesha & Maa Sarawati on this day.

Fourth Day of Diwali, Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja, an occasion for Lord Krishna’s adoration, is observed the day following Diwali. Most people of faith agree that Lord Krishna saved the people of Mathura from Lord Indra’s relentless downpours by raising the mountain now known as Govardhan.

Bhai Dooj refers to the fifth & final day of the Diwali celebration.

Last but not least is Bhai Dooj (sometimes spelt Bhau Beej), a festival honouring the unique bond shared by brothers and sisters. In the same way that Raksha Bandhan honours the link between siblings, this holiday does the same.
