Sri Lanka’s “NAGIN Dance” after beating Bangladesh at the Asia Cup 2022. Find out the reason why RIGHT NOW

After a dominating win, the Lankan Lions were so thrilled that one of their players did the “Nagin Dance” to celebrate. On Thursday, at the Dubai Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by two wickets to go to the Asia Cup’s Super Four (September 1). Group B saw Sri Lanka & Afghanistan advance to the Super Four, but Bangladesh was eliminated after dropping both of their matches. India, though, has already advanced from Group A to the Super Four, leaving the final spot open for the victor of Friday’s match involving Pakistan and Hong Kong.

Sri Lanka got off to a good start in their chase of a formidable total of 184, registering 48 runs inside the powerplay. But by the ninth over, they were in deep danger at 77/4.

However, Sri Lanka had some success in the penultimate over, scoring 17 runs off Ebadot Hossain’s over to move the score in their favour.

On the very first ball of the final over, Sri Lanka required 8 runs, and Theekshana hit a single. Then, Asitha Fernando, who was making his debut, smashed a boundary and scored 10 runs (without being out) off just 3 balls. With only one run needed from three balls remaining, Sri Lanka was on the verge of a thrilling two-wicket win with two wickets remaining and four balls to spare when word was communicated to the on-field umpire that Mahedi had overstepped. It also marked the most runs scored in a T20I match in the United Arab Emirates, surpassing Afghanistan’s 180 in a match against the UAE in 2016.

The win pumped up the Lankan Lions, and one of their Sri Lankan players even did the “Nagin Dance” in celebration. The Bangladesh team’s Nagin dance celebration after eliminating Sri Lanka from the 2018 Asia Cup inspired Sri Lanka’s dance of victory.

Taskin Ahmed (2/24), Mustafizur Rahman (1/32) and Mahedi Hasan (1/30) also took wickets for Bangladesh, although Ebadot Hossain (3/51) was the most effective and expensive bowler.

Earlier, both teams traded blows throughout the first innings of the game, but Bangladesh eventually posted a respectable score of 183/7 in 20 overs.

When Bangladesh was asked to bat first, they sent out opener Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who promptly got off to a scorching start with 38 runs off of 26 balls. Yet Sri Lanka fought back, taking wickets at periodic intervals in the middle overs.

The innings were given a boost when Afif Hossain stepped in and blasted his way to 39 runs off only 22 balls, taking control of the game. Until his dismissal in the 17th innings, he had contributed to a stand for the 5th wicket that had yielded 57 runs off 37 balls.

Bangladesh’s score improved to 183-7 thanks to a 24-run eighth-wicket stand between Mosaddek Hossain (24 not out) & Taskin Ahmed (11 off 6).

Chamika Karunaratne took two wickets for Sri Lanka, and Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva took two wickets for himself.

The final scores were Sri Lanka 184-8 in 19.2 overs (Kusal Mendis 60, Dasun Shanaka 45, Ebadot Hossain 3/51), and Bangladesh 183-7 in 20 overs (Atif Hossain 39, Mehdiy Hasan Miraz 38, Chamika Karunaratne 2/32). (With IANS inputs)
