Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday coincides with Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, the architect of the “complete revolution,” who was born on the same day.
On October 11, Ranchi poet Anwar Ali will turn 80. There may be some confusion as to who this Anwar Ali character is. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan first appeared on screen more than 50 years ago portraying a character with this name.

In the 1969 film Saat Hindustani, written and directed by journalist, playwright, and filmmaker Khwaja Ahmed Abbas, the actor portrayed a poet from the city of Hindpiri, Ranchi. No poet by that name ever resided in Ranchi, though, hence the figure is fictitious.
The struggle to free Goa from Portuguese rule is at the heart of the film’s narrative. A group of seven people, including Anwar Ali, from various states throughout the country, will soon be departing for Goa on this mission. Amitabh says in the movie as part of his self-introduction: “Anwar Ali, the main man. People from Bihar come to Ranchi to work and party.” For those who don’t know me, my name is Anwar Ali. ) I am a poet from Ranchi, Bihar.
Bachchan won the “Best Newcomer” award for his portrayal of this character, which he approached with great passion. Interestingly, Abbas paid him Rs 5,000 (around $100) for his acting services.
The actor was quoted as remarking in one interview that the pay wasn’t a lot at the time, but that it also wasn’t less for a newbie.
And he had said, “Anwar Ali’s kirdar’s taur par mujhe break na mila hota, toh pata nahi mai aaj kis maukaam par hota.” (I have no idea what my current situation would be if I hadn’t gotten my big break playing Anwar Ali.)
The inaugural screening of “Saat Hindustani” was attended by Bachchan and his parents at Delhi’s Sheela Cinema. Even before this, Abbas saheb had asked Meena Kumari to a test screening of the film. Meena Kumari’s effusive praise of Anwar Ali’s performance made Bachchan crimson in the face.
Abbas may have felt a personal connection to Ranchi, which is why the city is mentioned in the script for “Saat Hindustani” several times. Ranchi’s celebrated author Ghiyas Ahmed Siddiqui was a close buddy of his. Dr Siddiqui Mujibi, Siddiqui’s brother and a retired professor, claims that Khwaja Saheb personally met his brother at the train station every time he travelled to Mumbai.
On the same day that Bachchan turns another year older, the ‘complete revolution’ leader Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan was born. Though it could be a purely coincidental moment, Amitabh uses Anwar Ali’s name in a line of conversation while portraying the latter. His line in the conversation goes something like, “I belong to the state of Bihar, where Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan and Maulana Mazharul Haque were born”.
