“I was offered a number of jobs along the same lines when my online programme Gandii Baat broke records.” That was a significant complement. I remember a period when no one knew I existed. Everyone is now aware. “I had turned down a lot of business after that,” recalls the 43-year-old.
She’d portrayed a ghost in Stree, which was remarkable given that she accepted to a job in which she wouldn’t even be seen. “I did it in a business where everyone wants to appear well. ‘Yeh role kyun kiya, shakal nahi dikhi,’ says Logon. When I performed Gandii Baat, the same people complained to me, ‘why did you take that part, you were too daring.’ Kehna, logon ka kaam hai. “Isn’t that the enjoyment of life?” I answered. “After Gandii Baat, I had no image; I was simply an actress performing her profession,” Saini continues, adding that “every performer is waiting for that one Friday that may flip everything around.”
She claims that things are better today. “I’m turning down a lot of employment right now.” It worked in my favour at the moment. The crowd becomes disinterested. I’ll never be able to repeat Gandii Baat’s success. “There would be so much pressure on me that if I don’t do it correctly, I will be done,” Saini adds.
She continues, “I began my career from the south. It was dull playing the same sort of job over and again.” I’d want to play a part that I haven’t played yet. I suppose I am fortunate in that I am not under financial duress. I couldn’t have done it if it hadn’t been there.”
