Elon Musk, who runs Tesla and SpaceX and might soon own Twitter, is at the top of Fortune’s list of CEOs with the most money.
According to the Fortune 500, Elon Musk, who is the richest person in the world, was the highest-paid CEO in 2021. Musk got a salary of about $23.5 billion (roughly Rs 1,82,576 crore) after he exercised some Tesla stock options he was given in a multiyear “moonshot” giant in 2018. The Fortune 500 says that was by far the largest salary a CEO has ever gotten.
Musk, who runs Tesla and SpaceX and might soon own Twitter, is at the top of Fortune’s list of CEOs with the most money. But the others also work in the tech and biotech fields. Tim Cook, who is the CEO of Apple, Satya Nadella, who runs Microsoft, and Reed Hastings, who runs Netflix, are all examples of these leaders.
Fortune said that Cook was paid $770.5 million in 2021 alone. This was part of a 10-year grant of shares worth $1.7 billion. He moved up to number two on the list. During his time at Apple, the market value of the company went up by $2.2 trillion, so in a way, his salary was worth it. The Fortune 500 list puts Apple at number three.
In 2021, Jensen Huang of Nvidia was paid $561 million, while Tim Cook was able to corner the second one. A company representative told Fortune 500 that Huang “realised about $507 million from expiring options that had been given to him in 2011 and 2012.” This is because the price of the company’s shares has gone up by about 60 times in the past ten years.
Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, is in fourth place. He recently announced several new ways for the company, which has problems like account sharing and less interesting content than its competitors, to make money. The Fortune 500 says that Hastings made $453,500,000 last year. But a Netflix representative said that the report was wrong. “According to our proxy statement, he was paid $40.8 million in 2021, which included $650,000 in cash and $39.7 million in stock options,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Last year, Satya Nadella, who works for Microsoft, was paid $309.4 million, which put him in seventh place on the list. He was also voted “the most underrated CEO” in 2021. This is the sixth year in a row that he has held this title. Since 2017, Nadella has been in charge of Microsoft.
In 2020, a report from the Economic Policy Institute said that the average CEO of a “big company” made 351 times as much as the average worker. The CEOs of 280 Fortune 500 companies were looked at by the Fortune 500. They “earned a median total compensation of $15.9 million,” which is up 30% from a year ago.
